CONCEPT OF IGNORANCE by Don Palliparambil(09029)

CONCEPT OF IGNORANCE
Ignorance is the condition of being uninformed or uneducated; i.e.,
lacking knowledge or information. Lack of knowledge or facts about a
situation or a particular. Ignorance is the spring of misery. Through
ignorance one suffers afflictions and incurs great danger. Some
examples of ignorance is his racist attitudes were born out of
ignorance, an appalling ignorance about other cultures.
"What is ignorance, what is the origin of ignorance, what is the
cessation of ignorance, what is the way leading to the cessation of
ignorance? Not knowing about dukkha, not knowing about the origin of
dukkha, not knowing about the cessation of dukkha, not knowing about
the way leading to the cessation of dukkha — this is called ignorance.
With the arising of the taints there is the arising of ignorance; with
the cessation of the taints there is the cessation of ignorance. The
way leading to the cessation of ignorance is just this Noble Eightfold
Path; that is, right view... right concentration."
Influence of ignorance: There are different points; Socrates holds
that Ignorance causes misbehavior, Ignorance makes not to know the
truth, Ignorance makes darkness to life, and Ignorance takes controls
of the soul. Buddhism holds that Ignorance is the cause of doing merit
and sin, Ignorance makes not to know duty, Ignorance causes delusion,
Ignorance hides the truth, Ignorance the important defilement, chief
of all defilement, original cause of cycle of rebirth and Ignorance
makes not to know the Fourfold Noble truths.
There are different ways to get rid of Ignorance. Socrates holds
the getting rid of Ignorance by seeking the true knowledge, knowing
thyself and doing goodness wisely but Buddhism holds that getting rid
of Ignorance by destroying original cause of Ignorance : canker of
sense-desire, canker of becoming, canker of view or speculation,
canker of ignorance, considering the five aggregates and practice
calmness and insight meditation.
The result of getting rid of Ignorance. There is one same point :
having true knowledge, Socrates holds that having true knowledge of
things, Buddhism holds that having knowledge of the Fourfold Noble
truths, the similar point is believing in rebirth, the different
points are : Socrates holds that having strong mind over evil, having
pure soul, having good personality, having proper behavior, happy, and
immortal mind and he who is purified, enlightened, shall dwell among
the gods, but Buddhism holds that having clear knowledge of five
aggregates, having right view, right thought, right speech, right
action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right
concentration should help getting rid of Ignorance.
